China defends at Munich world solidarity and Global South

Munich, Germany Feb 18 (Prensa Latina) China on Sunday urged to strengthen world solidarity and double down on Global South at the 60th Security Conference.

In his speech, Foreign Minister Wang Yi referred to the “serious challenges” facing the international system given unilateralism and power politics.

In this complex scenario, “the UN authority and central status should be strengthened and in no way weakened.

The Foreign Minister praised China’s role in strengthening solidarity and cooperation in the Global South, by promoting the historic expansion of the BRICS group membership and supporting the African Union in its accession to the G20.

Wang Yi also reaffirmed his country´s commitment to increasing the representation and voice of developing countries in global affairs in order to make the global governance architecture more balanced and effective.

“China has become the largest troop contributor to peacekeeping operations among the five permanent members of the Security Council and the second largest contributor to the UN regular budget and peacekeeping assessments,” Yi added.

Regarding climate threat, Wang Yi underscored Beijing’s positive role in achieving the UAE Consensus at the UN Climate Change Conference.

He also reaffirmed the willingness to reach the largest reduction in carbon emission intensity in the shortest time in world history.

The diplomatic chief also referred to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and reiterated China’s support for establishing an international AI governance body under the UN framework.

“To strengthen global governance, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected,” Wang said.

The foreign minister stressed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and therefore, Taiwan affairs are internal matters, while urging respect for the One-China principle.

On the sidelines of the event, Wang Yi expressed some of these ideas during bilateral meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron.

To his US counterpart, Yi reiterated his country´s desire to promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of ties between the two countries based on the consensus reached by the heads of state of each nation at their meeting last November in San Francisco.
