The SUP stated in response to an assertion made on television by the congressman and presidential pre-candidate of the Colorado party, Gustavo Zubia.
The politician was dismissive when referring to crimes of sexual exploitation abuse and referred to “certain circumstances, especially in rapes, in which “the woman is 12 years old and is very happy to have sex with a 26-year-old individual”.
This expression provoked rejections from political forces and social actors, to which the SUP joined, urging not to minimize a scourge present in society.
In Uruguay, child sexual abuse is a drama that affects many children and adolescents, the medical association informed.
It added that “it occurs in a context of vulnerability, defenselessness in an asymmetrical relationship of physical and psychological power, and has very serious consequences for the physical, psychological and social health” of the victims.
The SUP pointed out that Uruguayan legislation seeks to protect minors and adolescents from violence, exploitation, and sexual abuse, considering them very serious crimes that, as such, “do not admit any other position than the strongest condemnation”.
