According to South African Police Minister Bheki Cele, such a drop in sexual crimes, which include rape, sexual assault and non-consensual physical contact crimes, is partly the result of a police awareness campaign.
Submitting the figures for the last quarter of 2023, Cele detailed provinces with a sexual crime reduction were downtown Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal (southeast), Limpopo (north), Northern Cape (west) and Eastern Cape (south).
