Donald Trump spends more time in court than campaigning

Washington, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) Former President Donald Trump closes, with today's ruling in the civil trial for fraud in New York, a week devoting more time to his defense lawyers than to his election campaign.

Just his legal attorney Alina Habba anticipated his doubts about his client´s reaction, who might not be satisfied with Friday’s ruling.

“If I could file the appeal now, I would,” Habba said in an interview with Newsmax on Wednesday, in which she said, “I don’t have hopes.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump in 2022 by alleging the former president falsely altered his net worth on financial statements in order to receive tax and insurance benefits for Trump Organization’s assets.

The trial concluded in January after two months of testimony from 40 witnesses, including Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, top executives of the organization, the tycoon’s adult children and the former president himself.

Engoron, who said Trump committed fraud in his real estate empire, will issue a sanctioning ruling on Friday.

In addition to a $370 million financial fine, James asked judge to bar Trump for life from the New York real estate business where he saw his power grow.

Trump’s allies, led by Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), alleged that Engoron is politically biased and that James also violated ethics rules in the prosecution. Stefanik filed complaints against both parties.

On Thursday, Trump was informed that the trial in the hush payment case against an adult film actress will begin on March 25, which would mark the first time former president would face the real possibility of being tried in a criminal proceeding.

Trump, who attended the hearing in which the calendar was set, reiterated to reporters his presumption of innocence and that he committed no crime.

Judge Juan Merchán reported Thursday that everything is moving forward in the case filed by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, centered on how he bought Stormy Daniels’ silence during his 2016 campaign.

Merchan denied the former president’s motion to dismiss the case brought against him and instead announced that jury selection in the trial will begin on March 25.

The former president had another key hearing on Thursday: the district attorney of Fulton County, Fani Willis, was subjected to a hearing that could disqualify her after Trump’s claim she and the special prosecutor in the electoral interference case are in a close relationship.

Willis admitted she has a personal relationship with prosecutor Nathan Wade, but insists no wrongdoing occurred.

The Georgia hearing could have major implications for Trump after the judge overseeing the case said Monday that it is “possible” Willis could be disqualified from trying the case.

Willis conducted a wide-ranging investigation that led to the first criminal booking of a former president in U.S. history. Along with Trump, 18 other people were charged in a plot to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.

The defendants refused to accept that Trump lost, and knowingly and willingly joined the conspiracy to illegally change the election tallies in favor of the tycoon.

The eventual disqualification of Willis for this “affair” would undoubtedly give Trump a victory as he seeks to overturn the case against him.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg for the almost certain Republican presidential nominee, who at this point is embroiled in a series of lawsuits and counter-suits from lower courts to the Supreme Court and a range of state and federal cases in which he will have to answer for 91 charges.
