The head of State, who was accompanied by the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba, Roberto Morales, began his tour at the Camilo Cienfuegos Genetic Livestock Company, the Presidency of the Republic reported on social networks.
The Livestock Company closed 2023 with 50 million Cuban pesos in losses, and five of its seven base units also reported losses and their yield does not exceed three liters of milk per cow.
Speaking with workers and managers, the president criticized the inefficient management of livestock and the insufficient planting of protein plants.
He stressed that “if we want the country to move forward, we cannot continue with this inertia.” He referred to the difficult situation with the import of powdered milk, for which solutions are being sought, but more must be produced, he insisted.
Díaz-Canel pointed out that Cuba’s problems must be resolved with Cubans’ own efforts, overcoming the blockade imposed by the United States.
The Cuban president also visited the José Hernández León Credit and Services Cooperative, which has 263 members and its 1,200 hectares are devoted to grow various crops.
In 2023, the company did not comply with what was contracted and the salaries of its workers do not reach 4,000 pesos.
During a meeting with the workers, the Cooperative’s potential to become an important productive center of the municipality was recognized.
Díaz-Canel emphasized the need to put all lands into production to have more food. You can get ahead here, he said.
The president’s tour of Consolación del Sur municipality also included a visit to the Mártires del Moncada polytechnic school, which has an enrollment of 343 students and its teaching staff covers 100 percent.
The president met with teachers and students from that educational institution, to whom he stressed the importance of training students with a comprehensive general culture, good preparation in languages, and that each one find motivation in the place they are granted upon completion of their studies.
He learned about the favorable impact that the approved income increase had in the Education sector, which has allowed many teachers to rejoin.
Díaz-Canel was also interested in school retention and the demand for workforce in the municipality.
At the meeting, the teachers thanked the Cuban Revolution for this measure and the differentiated attention to the sector.
Since the beginning of the year, the Cuban president has made several tours of the country’s municipalities to check the work priorities of the year and reach territories with difficulties and contribute to their solution.
