Raman Velayudhan, WHO´s expert, stated that out of this number, 4.5 million cases were reported in the Americas, marking the highest figure ever.

Velayudhan added that over three million cases were reported in Brazil, accounting for 68% of all infections.

Velayudhan considered that, taking into account all these factors and situations, the risk of getting infected with dengue is too high globally, so it requires utmost attention and response measures at all levels to support the crackdown on present dengue outbreaks and to get ready for future outbreaks.

There is currently a huge dengue outbreak reported in Brazil and public health specialists claim it is a harbinger of a coming case spike in the Americas, including Puerto Rico.

According to specialists, the dengue case toll skyrocketed in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay in recent months during the southern hemisphere summer and it will move northward across other continents as seasons pass by.

WHO warned that dengue will soon become an urgent global health issue, with a record infection number in 2023 and outbreaks in different places such as France, which has historically never reported any dengue case.
