UN warns of overcrowding and lack of access to northern Gaza

United Nations, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) warned today that about 1.5 million people are taking refuge in Rafah, north of Gaza, a governorate that now houses six times its pre-conflict population.

In addition to that area, besieged by the Israel Defense Forces, the neighboring Khan Younis governorate also reported heavy deadly fighting according to reports here.

The ongoing offensive damaged the largest Unrwa shelter in the south of the enclave, the Khan Younis Training Center, which has pushed thousands more Palestinians towards Rafah.

Unrwa’s Director of Gaza Affairs, Thomas White, warned that under the current circumstances, the Agency will not be able to effectively and safely conduct operations from a city under attack by the Israeli army.

The official himself described the rates of diseases such as diarrhea and hepatitis among children as alarming.’If they don’t have enough water it can be fatal,’ White insisted in a recent BBC interview.

Unrwa reports further lamented the impediments and lack of access for humanitarian assistance to enter enclave under current conditions.

‘Critical supplies to address food insecurity remain blocked due to the lack of approval from the Israeli authorities to move flour from the Israeli port of Ashdod to the Gaza Strip,’ the agency added.
