Piñera was responsible for human rights violations, PCCh says

Santiago de Chile, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh), Lautaro Carmona, recalled that former President Sebastián Piñera had an "undeniable" responsibility in the human rights violations that occurred during the social outbreak.

“Both due to the concrete measures he ordered and because he declared that there was a war in Chile. These human rights violations cannot, and should not, go unpunished,” Carmona said in statements published on Monday.

He added that the very serious abuses committed during the popular rebellion were confirmed by humanitarian organizations recognized by the United Nations.

The repression by security forces of the 2019 protests against the neoliberal model and social inequalities left a toll of 30 deaths and thousands injured, including more than 400 people with permanent eye damage.

The PCCh leader addressed the issue following the controversy generated by statements from Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who at Piñera’s state funeral last Friday said that during his government, the criticisms of the former president “were sometimes excessive.”

Social organizations condemned Boric’s words and described them as an act of denialism.
