Decline of the world’s migratory animal species on the rise

Tashkent, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS)reportedly warned that the world's migratory animal species are in decline and their risk of global extinction is increasing.

The information was presented by the UN biodiversity treaty at the opening of the COP14 conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Migratory species play an essential role in maintaining the world’s ecosystems and provide vital benefits by pollinating plants, transporting key nutrients, hunting pests and helping to store carbon.

Prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre, the statement notes that nearly half (44%) of CMS-listed migratory species show population declines.

In addition, more than one in five of these species (22%) and almost all fish (97%) on that list are threatened with extinction.

Overall, the risk of extinction is increasing for migratory species globally, including those not listed by CMS.
