Argentine journalists express support for Cubainformación project

Buenos Aires, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Club of Journalists Friends of Cuba (CAPAC) expressed its solidarity with the Cubainformación alternative communication project and denounced the actions promoted by the right wing to silence media that support the Caribbean island.

The coordinator of that portal, José Manzaneda, and the Euskadi-Cuba association are facing a lawsuit in Spain for alleged insults, slander and hate crimes.

This accusation was presented by the president of the Prisoners Defenders organization, Javier Larrondo, for the report “Creating a health crisis in Cuba: objective of the war against its medical cooperation,” from October 2020.

According to Manzaneda, the judicial action seeks to silence Cubainformación for drawing attention to Prisoners Defenders’ links with the Government of the United States in its strategy to destroy Cuba’s international medical cooperation.

In a statement, CAPAC denounced “the actions by the Spanish justice system to curtail freedom of the press and opinion, by agreeing to prosecute the journalist, the multimedia and the Euskadi-Cuba association.”

“We repudiate the Prisoners Defenders worm and counterrevolutionary organization, a political appendage of the US Department of State, and denounced for receiving financing from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), as well as Larrondo, representative of the right-wing Cuban Patriotic Union, which permanently carries out actions against the Revolution and led the defamation campaign against the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent,” it added.

It also charged that although there is no crime, they are asking Manzaneda for six years in prison and a fine of 15,600 euros (which if not paid would extend the prison term for 13 more months), plus 50,000 euros in compensation, in a trial that will take place in Madrid on February 15.

We charge that this is about silencing the press in solidarity with Cuba and with the just causes of this world, which subjugates freedom of the press and expression, in addition to curtailing the right to opinion. We demand that the Spanish justice system annul this process, CAPAC concluded.
