Guatemala’s Gov’t launches Special Group against Extortions

Guatemala City, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arevalo and Interior Minister Francisco Jimenez launched on Thursday the Special Group Against Extortion (GECE), aimed at cracking down this scourge with serious social aftermaths.

“A courageous unit committed to restore peace in the areas with the highest number of complaints received. The country is moving forward in security for the families,” the president posted on X.

At the ceremony, the head of State remarked that the National Civil Police (PNC) represents the team responsible for security and peace, because with their service, effort and daily work they make Guatemala a safer and more peaceful place.

Arevalo added that presentation of the GECE is a new effort to combat violence, and represents a policy that will be in charge of cracking down one of the crimes that most affects the Guatemalan inhabitants.

“For several years and perhaps decades, extortion has kept thousands of Guatemalan families in anguish,” Arevalo recalled, aged 65.

The head of State noted that extortionists are and will be enemies of his government, so that he urged for ensuring the people’s welfare, and promoting opportunities for all Guatemalans.

The unit created will operate within the PNC with 400 police officers and 200 motorcycles in order to develop strategic operations where there are reports of the presence of such individuals and groups dedicated to making those illegal charges.
