“I congratulate the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on his reelection, wishing him success in his new mandate and prosperity for his people. I reiterate our willingness to continue to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between both countries,” Díaz-Canel wrote on his X account.
According to statistics from the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Aliev won more than 92 percent of votes when all the ballots were counted, so 67.7 percent of citizens called to the polls participated, the report from the electoral body stated.
Azerbaijan’s general elections were initially scheduled for October 2025, but due to border conflicts with Armenia in the Nagorno Karabakh region, the Azeri president called early elections last December.
Ten Heads of State and Government from that region and the world congratulated Aliyev, including the leaders of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and Pakistan, Arif Alvi; Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic; Iraq, Latif Rachid, and the president of China, Xi Jinping.
