Minister of the Interior of Guatemala to meet with Attorney General

Guatemala City, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) The Minister of the Interior of Guatemala, Francisco Jiménez, will attend a working meeting with Attorney General Consuelo Porras, as the country's president, Bernardo Arévalo, ratified on Tuesday.

Jiménez will be accompanied by the director of the National Civil Police, David Boteo, and authorities from the Anti-Narcotics branch, who will follow up on issues of inter-institutional coordination, as announced by the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency last week to the local press.

Porras previously sent an invitation to Arévalo to meet her at the headquarters of the Public Ministry. In a video published on TikTok this Tuesday, Porras commented: “unfortunately I tell you that (the president) is not coming; He sent me a note informing me that he was appointing the Minister of the Interior.” Then she recalled that “it was the president who summoned me; however, it could not be done, since it was not the appropriate way. He invited me, but it couldn’t happen either, since it wasn’t the right way. Therefore, I invited him so that he could attend to coordinate on all situations that are of interest to our nation,” the attorney general said.

In the end, Porras asked Arévalo to reconsider his coming to meet her so that they could discuss all those important items.

The Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency emphasized that “as indicated at the time, the President designated the Minister of the Interior to attend to the aforementioned invitation.”

On January 19th, five days after assuming the administration of the State, Arévalo called in the head of the Public Ministry, who excused herself from attending. Then, on January 29th, Porras attended the president’s second appointment, but left a few minutes later, citing legal impediments.

Arévalo reiterated that his request for Porras’ resignation is public and well-known, it is on the table: “she defines with her actions whether she accepts it or not,” he said. He then stressed a couple of days ago that the reasons the Attorney General invoked to be absent from the meeting in the Government Cabinet are unacceptable. “We have a Course of Action ready around this, but we are calculating the best moment to do it,” he said.
