Haitian authorities announce firearms ban during government protests

Port-au-Prince, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) Haitian authorities on Wednesday reiterated the prohibition of carrying firearms during government protests, in which deaths and injuries have already been reported.

Any citizen caught with weapons on public roads during the protests will be arrested and punished in accordance with the law. The same action will apply to those who opt for violence by deliberately attacking others´ lives and property.

Port-au-Prince Government Commissioner Edler Guillaume recalled that the right to protest is guaranteed, but, he stressed, without using firearms as banned by the Constitution.

In the last hours, one person was killed and four were injured while a gas station and other establishments were looted.

Haiti´s Prime Minister Ariel Henry must leave today, and if he refuses, the country could turn into total chaos.

An agreement was signed on December 21, 2022, underlining that PM Henry would remain in office for 14 months, which he would hand over on February 7.

He was to form a new government, set up a Provisional Electoral Council and assume the organization for coming elections.

In view of his silence in this regard and the absence of an attitude that would please his detractors, opponents began to promote protests.
