In a press release, the EC executive arm confirmed the formal sending of a letter to Hungarian authorities on the opening of the process, considering that this legislation violates the law of the bloc, a fact that revives old questions from Brussels on the actions of Budapest.

This decision follows a thorough evaluation of the new regulation on the Defense of National Sovereignty, which violates several provisions of EU primary and secondary law, including democratic values, the principle of democracy, and the electoral rights of citizens, the document noted.

According to the European Commission, the law establishes an Office for the Defense of National Sovereignty to investigate certain activities in the interest of another State.

The text stated that Hungary has two months to respond to the EU executive’s concerns.
