Brazil´s Health Minister calls nationals to unite against dengue

Brasilia, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) Brazil´s Health Minister Nísia Trindade has called states, municipalities and civil society to make a joint effort to fight off dengue.

“Let’s cover water boxes, dispose of garbage properly, keep animal water containers always clean, keep bottles and tires in covered places, remove accumulated water from glasses and plants,” Trindade urged.

For such a mission, she indicated, you can count on the pivotal work by agents to combat endemic diseases. “Help them in eliminating possible mosquito breeding sites at home and in your neighborhood,” Trindade added.

She stressed that the whole society´s involvement is critical, taking into account that about 75% of the mosquitoes’ foci are inside the houses.

According to Trindade, Brazil is the first country to incorporate the dengue vaccine into the Public Health System (SUS) and the Ministry intends to increase production and access.

In the meantime, vaccination will be carried out progressively, given the limited number of doses produced.

The criteria for the initial distribution for a group of municipalities were based on the incidence of the disease and defined by the ministry and the national councils of state and municipal health secretaries.

Children aging 10 to 14 years will be priority to immunize. Several Brazilian cities are facing an emergency situation given the increase dengue cases.

Such a situation demands additional actions from the federal government, governors, mayors and the entire population.

Trindade pointed out that an Emergency Operations Center was set up to analyze the cases on a daily basis and to mobilize actions of all agencies involved in fighting off dengue fever.
