During a meeting with the interim Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, the French Foreign Minister pointed out that electing a new president of the Lebanese Republic is an essential issue to keep pace with the major challenges facing the country and the region.

At the close of a tour of the Middle East, the French diplomat commented here on Paris’ international efforts to stop the war in Gaza, preserve stability in Lebanon and eliminate the dangers of the same.

Earlier in the day, Séjourné held a meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib and, according to local media, left the Foreign Ministry without making any statements.

The visit of the French minister follows a diplomatic movement to Beirut which included last week the visit of his counterparts from the United Kingdom, David Cameron, and Hungary, Péter Szijjártó.

In this context, Lebanon demanded the respect and implementation of all UN resolutions, including resolution 1701, adopted by the Security Council in August 2006.

It also reaffirmed its position in favor of restoring calm and security in the south by withdrawing Israel from all occupied lands, as well as stopping violations of national sovereignty.
