Egyptian president meets with Blinken to discuss Gaza war

Cairo, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met on Tuesday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, with whom he discussed the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the talks on a ceasefire.

The two parties also reviewed the efforts to secure an exchange of detainees between the Palestinian militias and Israel, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency.

The Joe Biden administration is under intense domestic and international pressure to pressure its main ally in the Middle East in order to force it to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

During the meeting in Cairo, El-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s efforts to increase the volume of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory, which has been under Israel’s fire since October 7.

Egyptian authorities have repeatedly accused Israel of hindering the entry of food, water, medicine and fuel to the coastal enclave.

El-Sisi demanded the need to implement the United Nations Security Council’s resolutions on the issue and adopt serious measures to reach a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause in order to ensure sustainable stability in the region.

He also highlighted the fundamental role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNWRA).

Benjamin Netanyahu’s Government accused 12 of UNWRA’s 13,000 employees of allegedly participating in the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS)’s operation on October 7.

Both UNWRA and the UN announced an immediate investigation, but several Western countries, including the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, suspended the funding to the agency, although the allegations have not yet been proven.

The head of US diplomacy expressed Washington’s interest in maintaining coordination with Cairo on the crisis.

Blinken began this week a new tour of the Middle East to address the war in Gaza, where more than 90,000 people have been killed and wounded to date.
