Chile: Forest fires to impact on economy

Santiago, Chile, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) The forest fires, the largest disaster in Chile in the last 14 years, will impact the economy, whose damages are being calculated in the public and private sectors. Finance Minister Mario Marcel announced a plan to mitigate the damages, including the first delivery to affected families of a bond of 1.5 million pesos (about 1,700 dollars) to purchase household goods and equipment lost in the fire.

Support for reconstructing homes is estimated at around 6,000 million pesos, although the registration is ongoing, and the final number will undoubtedly be higher.

Marcel pointed out that housing costs alone will amount to several hundred million dollars.

It has been decided to tolerate surcharges and interest for late tax payments, extend tax return deadlines, and activate insurance and commercial support through BancoEstado.

The exemption of customs duties will also facilitate international donations from individuals and institutions.
