Caribbean Bank issues banknote for Grenada’s independence

Basseterre, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) The Central Bank of the Eastern Caribbean issued a banknote with the images of three historical personalities of Grenada, in salute to the half-century of that country's independence, the media reported today.

The Loops Caribbean News website reported that it is an EC$50 bill (US$18.50) with the faces of former Grenadian Prime Ministers Eric Gairy and Maurice Bishop, as well as Kirani James, Olympic champion in the 400-meter race.

It was designed by a team of professionals from that Antillean nation and after its introduction into circulation it will be used in all the Bank’s member territories, namely Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla and St. Lucia.

On February 7, the so-called Spice Island will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom with an extensive program that includes trade fairs, ecumenical services, as well as academic, sports and cultural activities.

That day will feature a military parade, while a show with 500 drones will illuminate the skies for the first time with a combination of movements and lights, which will recreate the culture, personalities and representative places of the Caribbean country.
