Rains leave floods and landslides in Ecuador

Quito, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) Heavy rains in Ecuador associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon caused havoc in several provinces of the country, where floods and landslides were reported on Monday.

According to the Secretariat of Risk Management, there are 26 rivers with a tendency to increase their level due to rainfalls.

In the province of Imbabura, in northern Ecuador, the water swept away everything in its path, logs, stones, mud, even household goods, while firefighters evacuated people who were trapped inside their homes.

Likewise, in areas of Guayas, on the coast, heavy rains were reported, causing traffic accidents, while in Pichincha, in the highlands, there was a landslide.

The National Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology (INAMHI) maintains an active alert for rains, storms and wind expected until Wednesday, February 7.

The most affected provinces will be Santo Domingo, Manabí, Esmeraldas, Los Ríos, Guayas, Imbabura, Pichincha, Cotopaxi and Bolívar.
