Lula for reinvigorating relation between Parliament and Government

Brasilia, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, insisted today on the importance that dialogue with parliamentarians has for his government, in the midst of a turbulent relationship with the National Congress.

“Dialogue is a necessary condition for democracy. Dialogue that overcomes party affiliations. That goes beyond political preferences or electoral disputes,” Lula wrote in a message delivered by the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, at the opening of the Year Legislative.

He described the necessary talk, above all, as a “republican obligation that all of us, representatives elected by the people, have to fulfill.”

The nexus between the powers is bellicose, especially with the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira. The veto of billions of reais to commission amendments provided for in the Budget and the end of the tax exemption for religious leaders are some of the points that sour the relationship.

Even being in the federal capital, Lula did not attend the event that marks the end of the parliamentary recess and brings together federal deputies and senators.

The reading of the document was done by the first secretary of the Congress board, legislator Luciano Bivar.

The Executive’s report carried out an evaluation of the measures implemented, such as the fiscal framework, and highlighted priority guidelines.

Among them are the continuity of the second phase of the tax reform, focused on the tax on income.

“The Government will dialogue with the National Congress to build the second stage of the tax reform, focusing on income taxation,” an excerpt of the document highlights.

He assures that “2023 can be summarized in one sentence: so much has never been done for our people in such a short time. And that was only possible because our institutions were active, independent and harmonious.”

He states that the Legislative, Judicial and Executive powers, throughout the year, remained firm in their responses to the most urgent issues. And, also, “in confronting issues that have been awaiting adequate solutions for a long time.”

For Lula, the joint victories of the Government and Congress represent their common debt to Brazil and the Brazilian people.

“Commitment that, I am sure, will be maintained throughout the trajectory that we all begin to travel. Well, we all have a lot to do,” highlighted the founder of the Workers’ Party in his text.
