Cuba monitors probable floods in north western coast

Havana, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is monitoring the persistence of strong winds in the Gulf of Mexico, as this situation might cause strong swells and moderate flooding on the northwest coast of the country on Monday.

The Meteorological Institute reported that winds will have speeds between 25 and 40 kilometers per hour (km/h), although higher in coastal areas, while in the rest of the country they will be between 20 and 35 km/h in the center, and up to 25 km/h in the east.

In addition, there will be light coastal flooding in the southern coast of central and eastern Cuba, mainly in the gulfs of Ana Maria and Guacanayabo, as well as in the south of Pinar del Rio province and the Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) special municipality.

The head of the Forecasting Center of the Institute of Meteorology, Dr. Miriam Teresita Llanes, forecast the arrival of a new cold front, accompanied by showers, rains and strong winds, with speeds between 25 and 40 km/hour, although higher in gusts.

Starting on Tuesday, there will be a marked drop in temperatures in western and central Cuba, due to the influence of a cold and drier air mass of continental origin over the territory, the specialist said.

On Sunday, associated with the advance of an active band of prefrontal clouds, with showers, rains and thunderstorms over western and central Cuba, strong winds caused power outages in several municipalities in Havana.

The Casablanca weather station reported a gust of 64 kilometers per hour but it is not ruled out that they were higher in other parts of the capital.
