Costa Rica analyzes causes of abstentionism in municipal elections

San Jose, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) Still without offering definitive data, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Costa Rica (TSE) announced today that only 68.3 percent Costa Ricans went to the polls to select their municipal representatives.

In the third cut made by the electoral body, it was announced that the provisional results take into account 1,625 polling stations processed, out of the total of 6,469, which could increase as the total counts at the voting tables advance.

An analysis indicates that four years ago abstentionism registered 63.6 percent; in 2016, it was 64.6. Meanwhile, electoral participation on this occasion also decreased, highlights an article published in CRHoy.com.

Analysts believe that several reasons influence these results, one of them is that structural factors predominate that explain the low voter turnout such as apathy towards politics that was also observed with high levels two years ago in the presidential election.

In general, the citizenry shows resistance, basically it occurs more among younger voters who show less adherence, they are less faithful to electoral democracy, explained the specialist Sergio Araya.

Gustavo Araya identifies this same phenomenon as a motivation of political culture.

Municipal elections tend not to be as lively as national elections, there is not as much enthusiasm.
