Cases of acute neurological disease in Guatemala rise to 51

Guatemala City, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) Confirmed cases of acute neurological disease of unknown causes in Guatemala rose to 51, with the first in this capital department, the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance (Mspas) reported today.

The health ministry detailed that of this total number, 40 correspond to Suchitepéquez, six to Retalhuleu, two to Huehuetenango, two to Quetzaltenango, plus the one in the city, of which 39 are in the process of recovery and nine are hospitalized.

There are still 12 suspects pending confirmation, according to the agency, which added another death, bringing the number to three.

The death was a 44-year-old man from the municipality of Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango, who died on January 31,

At the end of last week, Mspas established an epidemiological and population alert in Suchitepéquez, Escuintla; Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango and Retalhuleu, due to the disease.

Authorities of the demarcation that constitutes the epicenter stopped carnival activities to avoid the spread of the disease, which worries the country due to the increase of suspected cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The Ministry of Social Welfare instructed the Integral Attention Centers of the municipalities of Mazatenango and Escuintla to close the beginning of classes this Monday, due to the latest health alerts.

Among the symptoms of the disease, the central body reported diarrhea, fever, respiratory problems and decreased stretch reflexes.
