TSE proclaims elections open in El Salvador

San Salvador, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of El Salvador, Dora Esmeralda Martínez, announced today the beginning of the electoral process to elect the president, vice president and members of the Legislative Assembly.

In a ceremony at the Plaza La Libertad, in the Historic Center of the capital, the chief magistrate of the TSE called her compatriots to participate in compliance with the law and to carry out transparent elections, in which the will of the people prevails.

In the presence of TSE magistrates, national and international observers, officials and the diplomatic corps, Martinez described the opening as a “symbolic act” of the electoral day that will mark the political history of the country.

He also called on his compatriots to go to the polls with optimism and enthusiasm for the election of the country’s authorities in this appointment with democracy.

Martinez asked Salvadorans to participate in the election day and to subscribe “together a new achievement with the history” of El Salvador, whose future is only decided by the majority, he assured.

Since around 05:00 (local time), TSE delegates began with the delivery of credentials to the members that will be part of the Voting Boards (JRV) to formalize their entry to the voting centers and finalize logistical details, inclluding, the delivery of ballots.

Among the voting centers already reporting activity is the Departmental Government Center of Usulután where 25 JRVs will be located for 17,000 people eligible to vote in this place.

In addition, movements are reported in voting centers in San Miguel. According to community radios in the Complejo Educativo Fe y Alegría of San Miguel, the JRV 3384 will be integrated by only three people, since the other members did not show up.

In the country there are 1,595 voting centers with 8,564 Juntas Receptoras de Votos (Voting Boards) so that 5,473,305 Salvadorans, registered in the electoral roll, may cast their vote.

The TSE indicated that the first results may be known during the night.
