The Historic Pact bench, for example, released a statement where it “strongly” rejects the persecution against progressiveness, the country’s president, his cabinet, officials and against that same political coalition.
They also demanded the outgoing prosecutor Francisco Barbosa, Martha Mancera (deputy prosecutor) and the attorney Margarita Cabello to stop attacking the government with political bias.
“As Pacto Histórico we call on the national and international community to be attentive to the events and to speak out in defense of the country’s democracy”, the group requested.
It also urged the Colombian people to massively take to the streets and join the maximum popular mobilization in defense of democracy and its institutions.
Since last Friday, the president of the country warned about the attempts of certain right-wing sectors to put an end to his government.
Also the day before, Petro warned again that the Attorney General is seeking a coup d’état under an institutional cloak, “just as they wanted to do in Guatemala and for the same reasons”.
Following the denunciations, citizen support and that of several trade organizations did not wait long in social media under the hashtags #DefensaDePetro, #ConPetroHastaElFinal, #FirmesConPetro and #EleccionFiscalYa.
