US Congresswoman say path to peace does not go through war

Washington, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) The path to peace and security does not go through war, said Democrat Barbara Lee, member of the House of Representatives of the Congress of States, warning that "we must change course."

For Lee, “the war in Gaza has created a storm in the Middle East” since October 7th. Lee rejected “calls by some in Washington” for the continuation of Israel’s aggression in the Gaza Strip and insisted that “the path to peace and security throughout the region depends on the cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the release of all the hostages and the return to diplomacy.”

“I urge redoubling efforts to achieve a rapid reduction in tensions through a permanent ceasefire and strong regional engagement that includes international humanitarian organizations,” she said.

Her statement was published on its official website after the death of three US soldiers during a drone attack on a Pentagon base in northeastern Jordan over the weekend; Lee expressed her opposition to the idea that President Joe Biden would seek retaliation in response, as “he must go to Congress.”

The congresswoman also sent her condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers. “No one deserves the call these families received last weekend,” she stressed.

Lee has always been a dissenting voice regarding wars. In 2001, at the time of the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, Congress quickly and almost unanimously granted the then President, George W. Bush, the authority to “use all appropriate and necessary force.”

Lee was the only one who voted against her colleagues from both parties in the Lower House and the senators who approved the so-called “Joint Declaration of Authorization for the Use of Military Force”, the green light for the invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, where, according to Washington, the leaders of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization were sheltered.

On September 14th, 2001, when the congresswoman argued her vote, she said on the floor of the Lower House that she was “convinced that military action will not prevent new terrorist attacks against the United States.”
