UN agency denounces Israeli attacks against its facilities

Ramallah, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) denounced that Israel armed forces launched at least 270 attacks against its facilities in the Gaza Strip since last October 7th, killing 372 people.

The institution noted on X that the aid centers house tens of thousands of displaced families, who abandoned their homes after the start of the aggression against the Gaza Strip, since there is nowhere else to go, the people continue to take refuge in these same facilities.

In recent days, Palestinian authorities and parties have warned about an Israeli campaign against UNRWA, which provides services not only in the occupied territories, but also in several Arab nations where Palestinians live, including Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s government accused 12 of the agency’s 13,000 workers of participating in the armed incursion of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7th. Although both the agency and the UN announced a swift investigation to determine the truth of those claims, several Western powers, including the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, stopped the delivery of aid to UNRWA.

“Cutting this funding will cause the collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza,” 14 aid agencies warned in a statement on Wednesday. The signatories, including rapporteurs, high commissioners and CEOs of the United Nations, demanded the maintenance of humanitarian support to the Gaza Strip.

The document was signed by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, as well as the heads of the Humanitarian Aid Coordination Office, UNICEF, the WHO and UN Women, among others.
