On the 171st birthday of the Apostle of Cuba’s Independence, the higher education center underlined Prensa Latina’s collaboration in favor of academic, artistic, and cultural activities.
Wendy López, general director of the University Extension, gave the same distinction to the Cultural Association named after the Cuban hero in Guatemala, presided by Ana Cintrón.
The ceremony took place at the USAC’s Jorge Romero Auditorium, in the framework of the screening of the film “José Martí, El Ojo del Canario” (José Martí, Eye of the Canary, 2010) by filmmaker Fernando Pérez, to a group of students, mainly from the Political Science faculty.
Before the presentation of the film, Lazaro Valdespino, a Havana intellectual and teacher who lives in Guatemala, explained the historic and biographical value of the motion picture.
At the end of the screening, Valdespino, who is also a member of the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC), appreciated the identification with Martí as a child, a young man, and a victim of pressures by the Spanish rule.
The USAC founded the José Martí Chair on October 15, 2018. Since then, it has become an academic forum to reflect and disseminate critical thought.
