Flour, corn, beans and sugar have registered a notorious surge in prices in the last few months.
The Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics reported in 2023 that the commodity bundle cost ramped up from 2 to 74%.
This rise – according to the Institute – was caused by insecurity and difficulties related to the distribution of petroleum products in the territory, among other factors.
In 2024 the data will apparently not change, and this situation continues to worry the poorest families affected by the lack of availability of products.
Another element to take into account is the decrease in the purchasing power of the poor, who complain that all their money goes on food, and that eating in Haiti is a real headache.
