According to Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, any further attempts to separate Taiwan from China risk creating a more dangerous situation.
He added that the future implementation of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, a comprehensive pact between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, will be determined by the DPP’s policies and attitudes.
The ruling Party’s candidate, Lai Ching-te, recently won Taiwan’s leadership election with 40.05 percent of the votes, however the organization lost its legislative majority, which is now held by the Kuomintang.
The Chinese government emphasized that the results of these elections do not change the basic pattern of relations and the pursuit of reunification.
In a statement, Beijing stressed adherence to the 1992 Consensus and the One China principle: “we will resolutely oppose the separatist acts of Taiwan independence and the interference of external forces.”
Mainland China pledged to work with relevant political parties, organizations and individuals from all walks of life in Taiwan to promote exchanges and cooperation and “deepen cross-Strait integration and development, jointly promote cultural China, the peaceful development of relations between both sides and advance the great cause of the reunification of the homeland.
