Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin expressed hope that Washington and Beijing can promote the steady, sound, and sustainable growth of bilateral relations for the benefit of both countries and the world at large.

“I want to stress that developing China-US relations is in the fundamental interests of our two peoples and two countries and meets the expectations of the international community,” Wang added.

The spokesperson stressed that China is committed to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations. Therefore, it will not interfere in the presidential elections in the United States.

Meanwhile, “we will continue to firmly uphold our sovereignty, security, and development interests,” he concluded.

The United States is already amid a contentious election year that will culminate in November with the election of that nation’s president.

Beijing and Washington are currently showing a greater willingness to cooperate on issues of common interest and keep down the tensions that have characterized relations between the two world powers in the last few years.
