The legislative institution dawned fenced and surrounded by the Gendarmerie’s troops and trucks.
Frente de Izquierda (Left Front) lawmaker Romina del Plá denounced a “brutal repressive deployment.”
“Blocks and blocks of (trucks) of different forces. The fenced Congress is always a sign that anti-worker measures will be voted on. The intimidation will not prevent the popular mobilization to reject the Omnibus Law,” Del Plá pointed out.
Trade unions and social and human rights organizations announced that they would remain in the surrounding areas while the bill, which they consider harmful to all citizens, is being addressed.
The package of laws includes highly questionable aspects, such as attributing legislative functions to the Executive and declaring an emergency in economic, security, defense, tariff, energy, health, administrative, and social matters.
It also eliminates primary, open, simultaneous, and compulsory elections and allows renegotiating or terminating public administration contracts.
