Uruguay reports spread of EEEV in humans

Montevideo, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay´s Public Health Ministry (MSP) von Tuesday reported the first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) in humans.

According to MSP, the patient is “progressing favorably”.

The MSP reiterated health measures to prevent EEEV spread.

As of January 23, Uruguay´s Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) Ministry reported the death of 71 horses confirmed with encephalitis.

Since then, MGAP experts visited 527 establishments, where 15,130 equines live.

The dead horses with clinical symptoms totaled 192.

The report informed of 236 horses in recovery and 347 that were cured.

In Uruguay, vaccination is optional, while in neighboring Argentina, vaccination is mandatory.

Argentina’s Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria ordered mandatory EEEV vaccination for all horses and mares aging at least two months.

According to media reports, 31 human cases have been recently confirmed and two people have died in the province of Buenos Aires.
