The Humanitarian UN Coordinator in that country Bruno Lemarquis regretted the death of dozens of civilians killed, and assured that the humanitarian community of Congo is fretful about the serious violations committed in the city located about 100 kilometers from Goma, in North Kivu province.
Among others, humanitarian workers recorded violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.
Lemarquis recalled the conflict’s sides their duty to protect civilians, guarantee the safety of humanitarian workers and ensure that aid can reach those most in need.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric described the humanitarian impact of the latest escalation in violence as alarming.
Nearly 8,000 men, women and children have been displaced and are seeking refuge near Mweso Hospital while over 250,000 people in the area are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, the spokesperson provided details at a press conference.
