President of Guatemala summons Attorney General anew

Guatemala City, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) The President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, summoned Attorney General Consuelo Porras to a Council of Ministers after she failed to attend the meeting he convened last Wednesday.

The question is whether the head of the Public Ministry will show up, although the President assured that she is obliged to appear, based on article 4 of the Organic Law of the MP.

“The Attorney General rejected the invitation, and we received in response to the four points requested, a letter signed by an employee of the (Public Ministry),” Arévalo said at a press conference. “In essence, the letter does not respond to the specific requests made to her, and given that this information was not provided, we invite her to attend the meeting at 9:00 a.m., local time, at the Presidential House,” Arévalo noted.

In relation to Porras’ non-attendance at the meeting on the 24th, he expressed that “I am not going to make an assessment, I am going to allow the people of Guatemala to draw their conclusion,” and added that Porras’ resignation is a generalized request, since “the Attorney is a person internationally sanctioned for participating in corruption networks.”

“We state that, within the context of these last months, her actions have always enabled the spurious use of legislation and political persecution,” Arévalo stressed.

“We invite her to start a discussion on specific issues that are within the structure of the rules and ways in which the Government of the Republic should operate,” Arévalo stated. “We hope that she complies with the law, because it obliges her and there is no other option, and she would be in breach of duties if she does not attend,” he added.

In a video published on the Prosecutor’s Office’s social networks, Porras stated that, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, the Organic Law of the MP and other current legal regulations, she is not subject to any power of the State.
