On Monday, more than 170 firefighters from different Ecuadorian regions are fighting the flames there, along with 90 other people, including park rangers and volunteers, who climbed the mountain for two hours to reach the fire line where temperatures are extreme, according to official information.
The Secretariat of Risk Management reported on its X account that “due to unknown causes” this forest fire broke out in the buffer zone of the reserve, located in the Espejo canton, in Carchi.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition reported that, due to the difficult access to the area and the prevailing winds, it has not been possible to control the flames. The ministry added that they are carrying out the relevant investigations to identify the causes of this event, which is taking place while in neighboring Colombia there are also intense forest fires exacerbated by the heat and scarce rainfalls.
