Former President Castillo’s nephew turns himself in to justice

Lima, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) Former President Pedro Castillo’s nephew Fray Vasquez Castillo was transferred on Monday to the Peruvian capital under a court order of two years of preventive detention, after surrendering to the police in the southern Puno City.

Vasquez Castillo had been wanted since March 2022 as he went into hiding due to the aforementioned ruling, and the Interior Ministry offered a reward of 30,000 soles (USD$ 8,380) to whoever gave information leading to his capture.

Vasquez, accused of collusion and influence peddling, was transferred from Puno in a police plane and after his arrival he was immediately taken under heavy custody to police facilities for his subsequent delivery to a judge.

Police sources affirmed that the fugitive had negotiated his surrender as a collaborator of the Prosecutor’s Office -which implies confessing to a crime and presenting evidence against higher level culprits- and the General Commander of the Police General Victor Zanabria said the outcome was the result of an 11-month intelligence work.

However, the detainee’s lawyer Ivan Ramirez, assured that surrendering was a decision of Vasquez with which he does not agree, considering the justice system acts according to political criteria.
