In Montevideo’s Plaza Cuba, Martí’s compatriots and Uruguayan friends of Cuba paid tribute to him before a sculpture that immortalizes him, and laid a wreath.
The simple verses of the poet: “I cultivate a white rose both July as in January, for the sincere friend who lends me his hand frankly,” took on a new lyricism in the tribute.
Also present at the event were members of the Embassy’s staff and health professionals from the Cuban Medical Brigade who are working at the José Martí Ofthalmological Hospital in Montevideo, as well as representatives of local political organizations here, graduates from the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Cuba, Uruguayan residents in exile in Cuba, and other friends in solidarity with the Cuban Revolution.
Rachel Maury, first secretary of the Cuban Embassy, underlined the validity of Marti’s legacy.
She recalled the bilateral relations in which José Martí was a protagonist, especially when he worked as the Uruguayan consul in New York for five years.
