Bangladesh calls for support to sort out Rohingya crisis

Dhaka, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday called for more support from the international community to achieve the safe repatriation of the Rohingya community to Myanmar and guarantee them a dignified life in their homeland.

At a meeting in Dhaka with a British parliamentary delegation, the prime minister said that the world should think about measures to resolve the Rohingya crisis, according to a Bangladesh Sansgbad Sansgthad(BSS) report.

Hasina recalled that her country has been providing refuge to that community since 2017, after a mass exodus from Myanmar due to the difficult humanitarian situation prior to the the military coup.

There were about 40,000 pregnant women among those forcibly displaced from their homeland, Hasina noted.

On the current negotiations with the military junta, the Bangladeshi head of Government underscored that Myanmar agreed to take back its nationals, but has not taken any actions yet although six years have passed, she assured.

The official explained that since the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflicts, Bangladesh is finding it a heavy burden to maintain assistance to the Rohingyas.

Although six years have passed by, Myanmar did nothing tangible and practical to take back its citizens, although they previously agreed to do so, said Hasina, who added that as a result, the refugees are leading a life of hardships.
