UN spurs to back multinational forces in Haiti

ONU-3-1
United Nations, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) spurred on Friday to back multinational forces approved for Haiti after the Kenyan Supreme Court denied the deployment of 1,000 police officers for that initiative.

The need for this mission authorized by the Security Council remains extremely high, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary General Antonio Guterres, acknowledged referring to the ruling.

Dujarric insisted on the urgency of taking measures and raising funds to bring stability to Haiti, which has unprecedented levels of violence.

The multinational mission was approved in October by the Security Council and at the request of the Haitian authorities.

Kenya then proposed to lead the force, however, its authorities affirmed that the deployment will only occur if the funds and equipment are financed by the UN member states.

Other nations such as Burundi, Chad, Senegal, Jamaica and Belize further pledged troops, although Friday’s verdict leaves a key hurdle to overcome.

Meanwhile, the context in Haiti accumulates grim figures on the rise with over 8,400 deaths from gang attacks in 2023. The UN Office in Port-au-Prince estimates that some 300 armed groups control 80% of the capital, accounting for 83% of killings and injuries last year.
