Supreme Court of Brazil to judge those involved in coup

Brasilia, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil (STF), until April, will try 146 defendants for the coup acts of January 8th, 2023, against the Three Powers in Brasilia.

Judicial circles confirmed that the STF will also resume the trial of another 29 criminal actions starting in February.

The court has convicted 30 people accused of participating in the events since September, when it began trying the cases.

A total of 1,345 lawsuits were opened, and another 1,113 criminal actions are pending for evaluation of non-criminal prosecution agreements.

According to sources, the analysis of the other criminal actions against defendants for their involvement in the invasion and looting in the Esplanade of the Ministries must continue throughout the year.

In December, the high court received the first accusation by the Attorney General’s Office against a member of the group of financiers who had provided material aid to the group that invaded public buildings in Brasilia. For the MPF, there is evidence that the accused had chartered four buses to transport people to the federal capital, and organized and mobilized the people who participated in the events.

If the majority of ministers give their approval for admissibility, those involved will become defendants and will answer to the proceedings in court. If the ministers consider that there are not enough elements, the cases will be archived.

Those indicted by the Prosecutor’s Office are responsible for crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic State of Law, coup d’état, armed criminal association, qualified damage and deterioration of the demolished assets.
