An analysis by the Italian Society of Uro-Oncology (Siuro) shows that currently ‘it is estimated that in 55 percent of the cases, at the time of diagnosis, the disease is in its initial stages and is limited to the kidney’.
Dr. Alberto Lapini, former president of Siuro, pointed out that with early detection, ‘by means of partial or total removal of the organ, we manage to cure 50 percent of our patients’, and noted that ‘new techniques and technologies have made the interventions less invasive than in the recent past’.
However, many patients often discover the cancer through clinical tests performed for other health problems, and ‘that is also the reason why 30 percent of all renal carcinomas present in the advanced or metastatic stage,’ the specialist lamented.
