Fighting intensifies in southwestern Sudan

Khartoum, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Sudanese paramilitary forces reportedly attacked an Army base in the country's southwestern region, with a preliminary toll of about 23 dead and some 30 wounded. The base targeted in the clashes is the 22nd Infantry Division in Babanusa, West Kordofan State.

This attack is the end of a wave of fightings in this region during the last three days; it takes place in a military camp described as strategic for the Sudanese Army in its current offensive.

The aim is to regain positions after losing control of Uad Madani, one of the leading cities in Sudan.

The country has been completely devastated by the war and currently faces one of the biggest humanitarian crises in Africa, political analysts recall on Friday.

Clashes in Sudan erupted on April 15, 2023, due to disagreement amid an integration process between the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, vice-president of the Sovereign Transitional Council (STC) within the Armed Forces, and General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Army and president of the STC.

Both generals are battling for control in Sudan after the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
