UNRWA denounces attack on overcrowded shelter in Gaza

United Nations, Jan 25 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) denounced on Thursday the Israeli attack on the Training Center in Khan Yunis City, Gaza, which hit a building with 800 displaced people.

Consequently, there were 13 deaths and 56 injured, including 21 in a serious health condition, in what must have been a safe place, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres assured at a press conference.

Following yesterday’s onslaught, ambulances and the agency’s emergency teams had been denied access to the site, the UNRWA unfolded on its briefings issued here.

The near collapse of the health system and the lack of trauma care units in Khan Yunis is making the humanitarian situation increasingly intolerable and intense, the spokesperson warned.

That has been the third direct hit in this shelter, where nearly 43,000 internally displaced persons remain registered.

Buildings wavering the UN flag were bombed at least twice by tank fire, without warning. Dujarric recalled that the UN shares the location of its shelters directly with the Israeli authorities since the agency received assurances that the people inside its facilities would be safe.

“The UN continues to call on all sides to take all precautions to minimize harm and protect civilians and property, especially in densely populated areas, and to safeguard hospitals, clinics, medical personnel and UN premises in accordance with international law,” the spokesperson underscored.
