South African FM to travel to The Hague for case against Israel

Pretoria, Jan 25 (Prensa Latina) South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor is heading the South African delegation that will hear the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the genocide case against Israel on Friday.

According to a statement from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) issued on Thursday, the ICJ will deliver its ruling on South Africa’s request for interim measures in the case concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The case initiated by South Africa in December 2023 for “alleged genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip” seeks the ICJ to grant emergency measures to stop the war in that Palestinian territory.

In its request, South Africa asked the court to grant interim orders, including that Israel suspend its military operations in Gaza immediately, take reasonable measures to prevent the genocide of Palestinians, ensure that displaced persons return to home and have access to humanitarian assistance.

The DIRCO explains that humanitarian assistance includes food, water, fuel, medical and hygiene supplies, shelter and adequate clothing.

South Africa’s lawsuit also seeks to ensure Israel’s compliance with its obligations under the Convention not to engage in genocide and to prevent and punish such acts.
