Paraguayan agents seize 75 tons of marijuana in forests

Asunción, Jan 25 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan anti-drug agents seized 75 tons of marijuana in extensive natural forest reserves in the northeast of the country, the government informed today.

Military forces integrated to a special operation of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (Senad) currently deployed in those areas detected four drug traffickers’ camps and 25 hectares of cannabis plantations which totaled the mentioned amount, the institution declared to the newspaper ¨Hoy¨.

The operations against this scourge cover vast forested regions of localities such as the northeastern Mbaracayú, Canindeyú department, where drug traffickers grow the herb in areas confused with the vegetation of the reserves.

The actions against these illegal practices, headed by anti-drug prosecutor Néstor Narváez, are carried out by Senad special agents, guided by forest rangers from the Mbaracayú reserve, the source added.

The uniformed officers are working to detect and destroy as much as possible all the marijuana production and storage centers that invade these areas, a very complex task because the reserve covers 64,406 hectares and is the core of the Forest Biosphere Reserve of this jungle region, HOY newspaper reported.

Senad experts reported on the destruction in the area of large areas for the promotion of these illicit crops, which also adds environmental crimes, in addition to drug trafficking.
