Cuba urges UNSC to put an end to collective punishment in Gaza (+Photo)

United Nations, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's First Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Peñalver on Wednesday urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) to put an end to collective punishment in Gaza and described the Gaza situation as catastrophic.

“It is time to halt Israel’s genocide over the Palestinian people. We reiterate our unequivocal demand for an immediate cease-fire and an end to the conflict,” Peñalver added.

Peñalver also considered the urgent mobilization of humanitarian aid to Gaza as essential, under UN coordination to address the catastrophic situation.

Peñalver called the U.S. government to stop the paralysis of the Security Council which must fulfill its mandate to put an end to the collective punishment against the Palestinian population, as well as the escalated violence and massacre in Gaza.

UNSC cannot remain inert ahead of Israel’s illegal annexation policy, all its colonizing practices and its apartheid system, which have persisted for over seven decades in the occupied Palestinian territories, the diplomat remarked.

The Cuban representative supported the call to admit Palestine as a permanent member of the UN, as well as the initiative to urgently call for a Peace Conference under the auspices of the United Nations, focused on preserving the inalienable rights of Palestine.

The Cuban diplomat reiterated Cuba’s proposal to urgently send an international protection mission to Gaza, authorized by the General Assembly, to guarantee safety and protection for civilians and facilitate the delivery of emergency humanitarian aid.

The Deputy Foreign Minister demanded both total and unconditional withdrawal of Israel from the Syrian Golan and all occupied Arab territories, the cessation of aggressions against Syria and strongly condemned the military attacks by US and allies over Yemen, in violation of the international law.

“Acts of this nature encourage the expansion of war and genocide in the Gaza Strip. Violence is not the solution to conflicts in the Middle East,” he remarked.
