Cuba and Basque Country empowering women through agroecology.

Guantánamo, Cuba, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and the Basque Country are promoting agricultural projects to increase food production through agro-ecological techniques to empower women in this eastern province.

Karen Alvarado, a doctor of agricultural sciences, told Prensa Latina that the Basque Country-Cuba Solidarity Association and the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF) in Baracoa and Manuel Tames municipalities in Guantanamo are developing two projects of this kind.

Alvarado stated that this cooperation enables women’s empowerment in the fruit tree program to fight climate change in fragile ecosystems in Baracoa municipality.

The partnership between ACTAF and the Spanish autonomous community favors the support of food production and reforestation in Manuel Tames municipality, which, in both cases, benefits agricultural production units and local businesses.

The expert, who co-directs the projects on the Cuban side, informed that an estimated 131 women, 271 men, and 27 managers were trained in Baracoa in agroecological techniques for fruit trees, food hygiene, marketing, economics, and agricultural legislation.
